While studying yeast, Harden discovered that some enzymes require a small molecule called a coenzyme to function as a catalyst. This can be any nonprotein structure that proves essential to the activities of an enzyme. Not all enzymes require coenzymes, but this dichotomy explained a lot of mysteries.
