Wave mechanics views electrons as waves rather than particles, providing a coherent explanation for electron orbits. Schrödinger synthesized a lot of previous work from Maxwell, Broglie, Bohr, Heisenberg, and developed the mathematical basis for this theory, known as the Schrödinger wave equation.
