The coronagraph is a telescope with an opaque disk to block sunlight, enabling observation of the Sun's corona. By using this instrument, Lyot captured the first clear images of the corona outside an eclipse. This meant that astronomers no longer had to wait for total eclipses to study the corona and its spectrum.
