Bakelite

Bakelite is a strong, water-resistant, and electrical insulating plastic material created by reacting phenol with formaldehyde. When he searched for a solvent for it, he couldn't find one. This discovery sparked the modern development of thermosetting plastics (ones that do not soften under heat).
