In the California mountains, Michelson surveyed a 22-mile distance between two mountain peaks to an accuracy of less than an inch. A new measurement of the speed of light achieved high precision using an eight-sided revolving mirror. The determined speed was 199,798 km/s, 6 km/s faster than our modern estimate.
