Solar composition

The Sun's composition was determined to be primarily hydrogen and helium (in a 3-to-1 mass ratio) with some oxygen, nitrogen, neon, and carbon. This turned out to be similar to the composition of the Universe as a whole, as nearly as astronomers can determine.
