Hewish supervised the construction of a device with 2,048 separate receivers spread out in an array that covered an area of nearly 3 acres. This array detected regular bursts of microwaves from a place between Vega and Altair, lasting 1/13 of a second, occurring every 1.3 seconds. This object was eventually called a pulsating star or pulsar.
