The satellite Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE)'s sensitive instruments were anticipated to provide detailed measurements of cosmic microwave background radiation, necessary to provide experimental proof of the afterglow of the big bang. These findings supported the idea of an inflationary universe, and corroborated the theory of dark matter.
